One of the great things about downtown's Public Theatre is the hip bar/cabaret Joe's Pub so 'dangerously near'. As a result, the usual gaggle of classical-theatre subscribers mix on the sidewalk with the patrons of the avant-garde scene taking a smoke break thirty feet away. Here, blues/rock raconteur "Stew" leaps from the small club to the midtown razzle-dazzle of Broadway by way of the Public Mainstage with an ostensibly fictional show, but one which he acknowledges to be largely a story based on a life. His, to be specific.
Don't expect a traditional Broadway musical - it's more a concert with a lot of storytelling worked into the mix - the affable lead singer talks about his strange travels and artistic experiences, there are some skits, and the whole thing vanishes into a song from time to time.
The critical reception was almost universally warm - see "Critics Ratings", below - everyone had a good time, even if they weren't exactly comfortable calling it a "play" in the traditional sense.
